First, print the six templates below on paper that corresponds in color to the sample craft shown above.

Red Caterpillar Parts
Orange Caterpillar Parts
Yellow Caterpillar Parts
Green Caterpillar Parts
Blue Caterpillar Parts
Purple Caterpillar Parts

For preschool children (2 to 5 years old):
Before class, cut out all "Caterpillar Parts."  Have the "Caterpillar Parts" arranged in piles, such that parts for one caterpillar are in each pile.  Make one complete "Happy Caterpillar" as a sample craft to show the children.
During class, have children glue all of the "Caterpillar Parts" to a black sheet of construction paper.  Show them the sample craft, so they will know how to arrange the "Caterpillar Parts."

For early grade school children (6 to 7 years old):
Before class, rough-cut all "Caterpillar Parts" (the children will finish cutting the parts out).  Have the "Caterpillar Parts" arranged in piles, so that parts for one caterpillar are in each pile.  Make one complete "Happy Caterpillar" as a sample craft to show the children.
During class, have the children finish cutting out all the "Caterpillar Parts."  Next, allow children to glue them to a black sheet of construction paper.  Show them the sample craft, so they will know how to arrange the "Caterpillar Parts."
